It all begins in 1862, when Adam Opel, after numerous trips to Europe, goes to his town Russelsheim, near Frankfurt. Fascinated by new technologies, builds his first sewing machine and establishes the company Adam Opel AG. Opel's machinery equipment quickly conquer the domestic market and the international one, and as a result the company becomes one of the main producers of this type of equipment. In 1886 the factory in Russelsheim starts to produce bicycles as well. Opel used to sell its production bicycles to 1937, to that year 2.6 milion items left the factory.

The founder dies in 1895. Since then, his sons are responsible for leading the enterprise. In 1899, thanks to them Opel signs a contract with the company producing carriages - Friedrich Lutzmann. The first manually-assembled vehicle - Opel-Patent-MotorWagen, System Lutzmann, powered by 3.5 HP, with a maximum speed of 20 km/h, sold in 11 copies is then created. In 1901 in collaboration with a French designer Alexandre Darracq the model 9PS comes into existance. That year, the company begins the production of motorcycles. The first self-designed car - Opel 10/12 HP with a new two-cylinder engine and a built-in water pump is presented. For those times, the car was really modern and it could reach a bewildering speed of 45 km / h.

The first really widely available car is launched by Opel not until 1909. So known Doktorwagen (pol., niem. - "a car for physicians") is a small and very cheap two-place vehicle used generally by medicians and vets. Hence its name.

In its activity Opel bets on development and new technologies.Which bears fruit and modular production is introduced in 1910. So that different types of engines and chassis can be adjusted to the re-fabricated bodies. In 1912 - the company stops producing sewing machines. In 1914, thanks to the new car models and modifications of the old ones, Opel becomes the largest car manufacturer in Germany.

The winning streak lasts up to the economic crisis in 1929. In order to avoid its effects Opel establishes contacts with the General Motors concern. Americans buy 30% stake of Opel, and two years later another 20%. This cooperation improves the business, so that in addition to the passenger vehicles Opel produces new sports cars and trucks.
